Sheet rock is relatively easy to tear out (wear a mask for dust) and it can be replaced with 4'x8' wood paneling you'll like with the wood floors, (Always keep as much actual wood w/natural finish as possible - most people that don't usually regret it.) If you really don't like the small chopped up rooms (few do), it will be well worth ripping off the side of the wall facing what is now the dining/entry way to see what can be done. As an alternative or in addition thereto, you can cut 'windows' between and/or create half walls between what is now the dining/entry area and the kitchen/breakfast area IF you do it BEFORE you even start to remodel the front center part of the house.
You CAN, if properly done, add beams and strengthen supporting studs to create openings in load bearing walls fairly easily up to eight feet in width. Lyvonne What walls are weight bearing and what walls can be removed or at least an archway created between them matters much. Don't know if hubby would go for that though. You could add a small couch opposite the chairs. I'm going to try to play that scenario out in photoshop (though I may have to sweet talk lessismoore into helping me a little ) ) Any chance you know the dimensions of your room and the table & china cabinet? 2nd - you turn the table sideways (if that's possible) and create 2 spaces in the room - 1 dining & 1 living. Then you can add the mirror and some great art to that wall. Obviously to do that you'd have to extend the chair rail on the wall but I think that's a good idea anyway if it fits in your budget. 1st - you move the dining table more to the middle of the room & move the china cabinet to where the mirror is. I'm also looking for a nice orb shaped chandelier - the shape looks good over your table too but haven't found a great one yet.
